The SE residential neighborhood of Chaparral is situated around Lake Chaparral, a man-made lake which spans 32-acres. It is located at the southern edge of the city, just south of the Marquis of Loren Trail. To the east it is bordered by the Bow River Valley, to the south by 194 Avenue SE, and to the west by Macleod Trail.
The community has seen an 18% growth since 2009 and now has 3,919 homes. 75% of the properties in this community are single family homes with 92% of them being occupied by the owners of the property. According to Calgary’s 2011 censes, the median age of this community is 35, the average house hold is made up of 3.4 people and 99% of the community speaks either English or French. There are three distinct divisions making up the community of Chaparral, they include; Lake Chaparral, Chaparral Ridge and Chaparral Valley.
Lake Chaparral is the the largest division of Chaparral and is also the community I call home. I have lived here for eight years and watched my three children grow up in this beautiful community. To show my support to residents I donated a zamboni for the upper skating area and lake. I enjoy helping the community grow both with people and the experience of living here. Residents of Lake Chaparral enjoy exclusive, year round use of a 32-acre artificial lake which is surrounded by 22 acre park. Some of the amenities include are; a beautifully landscaped park with cascading waterfalls, recreational building with social room and kitchen, a sandy beach, year round fishing, boating, toboggan run, children's playground areas, picnic areas and cook shelter. There are also, tennis, basketball and beach volleyball courts, walking paths and an underwater scuba course. The community has many annual festivals and celebrations including a Triathlon, Winterlude, Stampede Breakfast, Lake Sleepover, Movie Night at the Lake and much more. There are 15 parks and play areas, a Catholic and Public Elementary School, shops and many restaurants to choose from.
Chaparral Ridge overlooks Fish Creek Provincial Park, giving it some of the best views in the area. The community is located in the NE corner of Chaparral and has approximately 800 households. This area of Chaparral does not have lake access but shares the same schools.
Chaparral Valley is the newest addition to Chaparral, and will have over 800 homes once Genstar Land Developer finishes the community. Chaparral Valley is nestled along side Blue Devil Golf course and Fish Creek Provincial Park with extensive pathways throughout the community and along the riverside. Fish Creek East SWM Retrofit Wetland runs just past the golf course, and is walking distance from the community. This protected land provides a thriving ecosystem for many species of birds and ensures sustainable protection to the trout spawning habitat in the Bow River. This area of Chaparral does not have lake access but shares the same schools.
